compelling stories you conveyed of families that chose to place their
children
in immersion schools. Your film promotes bilingualism and recognizes
the
cultural and ethnically diverse world in which our children live. For
this, the

SPEAKING IN TONGUES ENRICHING LIVES
By Jessica Dyer, age 10, and
Margaret Peterson, Jessica's
motherOur family moved to Japan and lived there for three
years.
Our children developed close friends and became fluent in Japanese.
Upon our return our
youngest
daughter,
Jessica, forgot nearly everything she learned.
In
Jessica's words,
"I came home from school, and my Mama
asked me if I wanted to watch SPEAKING IN TONGUES, and I said, 'Sure.'
I had no idea the movie would be so
emotional! By the end of the movie I realized that I can't even speak
to my
best friend Sakura anymore. I
decided I just HAD to learn Japanese again."
And she
did! She
pulled out all her old Japanese books
and re-taught herself Japanese. She has since exchanged email in
Japanese
with Sakura! Thank you, Marcia and Ken, for creating such a moving film
that inspired my daughter to regain her Japanese.

About
Speaking in Tongues
|
|
ABOUT
In
a time where 31 states have passed English Only initiatives, one urban
school district is exploring the provocative notion that speaking a
foreign language can be a national asset. We follow four diverse
students and their families as they encounter the challenges and
delights of becoming fluent in two languages. As we witness their
journey, we see how speaking more than one language changes them, their
families, their communities, and maybe even the world.
