About Speaking in Tongues
|
|
Meet Durrell, Kelly, Jason, and Julian.
Four typical American kids, with one
exception.
From the first day of kindergarten, their teachers spoke
Chinese or Spanish. Why? To give them a career
edge.
To raise their academic achievement. To maintain
their home
language. Or to help communicate with their
grandparents.
You'll be charmed and amazed by
this award-winning film's insightful exploration of the rewards and
hurdles
these pioneering students face as they become bilingual.
Enter
their world, and ask yourself - today, is one language enough?

Speaking in Tongues
Impacting Lives
|
|
From Alyssa Herrera-Set in
Belmont-Redwood Shores, CA:
"We
used the film
as the highlight
of a community event -- to raise awareness about language
immersion. We wanted to get more people in our
community to support the idea that our school districts' should have a
language
immersion elementary school. We
had about 30 people in attendance.
Unfortunately, we didn't get too many people coming from our school
district to the event. However,
many people from other school districts, who already have language
immersion
programs came. So, members from
our school districts were able to ask them for advice on how to get our
program
going.
And, for the people in our group
who may have been on the fence about language immersion elementary
schools, the
movie gave them more reason to really commit to pushing for a language
immersion school. Overall, it was a success and I'd like to host
another event
featuring the movie."

Bring Speaking in Tongues
to Your Community
|
|
|
Get
press, generate discussion, and mobilize your community.
1.
Create your own screening: Read the very useful "Host a Screening
Toolkit" developed by the "Made
in LA" filmmakers, and contact us to set up your own screening. (We're
developing our own
screening kit that should be ready later this fall.) Colleges and
universities,
public libraries, and local schools all are possible venues.
2.
Contact your local
theater: Send our web link (www.speakingintonguesfilm.info)
to your local independent film theater and ask them to program the
film. Offer to set up a post-screening panel discussion and help them
with outreach to the community. To
find the names of local independent theaters, check out the PBS website.
